Ghett'a Life Film Review

1.- Who was your favorite character (s) from the film? Why?

My favorite character was Derrick. He is the one that highlights from the rest of the characters. I like the fact that he doesn't care about the fight between the two sides of his town. He only cared about boxing, and he didn't stop until achieving that mission. Even if he had several obstacles, like his father political aspirations, that didn't allow Derrick to box. Or Don Sin, with his really violent mob.

2.- How does the film compare to the other Jamaican films from the 70s? (Besides visual effects, think about the plot and character development).

It changes a lot. In the 70's films, plots were more about how unjust the life in Jamaica was, in terms of getting succesful. Those films showed us the different ways a common jamaican had to get money to feed their family and to be famous or succesful. Also, there was a much poor character development,. The films focused on one main character and had no other really significant character. In Ghett'a Life, you can note that there's 4 or 5 main characters that are as important as Derrick, or close. We have Don Sin, Derrick's father, Gully, Big Toe.

3.- How are woman portrayed in this film? Is it a little or big advancement compared to the films from the 1970's?

I think woman are portrayed in a similar way compared to 70's films, but we can find some differences as well. For example, the main women characters were Derrick's mom and the coach's daughter. Derrick's mom plays a protagonist role especially when it comes to support Derrick in his decisions, unlikely the 70's mom characters. But there is no difference in terms of being a powerful woman that has a really important and respected voice. She is still that house-only woman.
